Electric Rollerblades: Introduction, Overview & Recommended Brands

Rollerblading can be an excellent workout, but have you ever wished you could enjoy the scenery without all the effort? It turns out, you can. Electric rollerblades are real, and they are, indeed, a dream come true.

What Are Electric Rollerblades?

Electric rollerblades are simply skates (or, more commonly, skate pads with wheels), that are powered by an electric motor. They are typically battery charged, and while they don’t feel exactly like a traditional rollerblade, they provide a fun experience of their own.

It is worth noting, however, that electric rollerblades can require a little more balance than their non-motorized counterpart.

There are some special safety considerations that we will touch on later, too, as you can often achieve faster and more consistent speeds with electric rollerblades.

Brands To Look Out For

There are many brands out there that manufacture electric rollerblades, and new versions are coming out all the time. Let’s take a look at some of the more popular brands, as well as recommended offerings from each.

Acton R10

Acton brands themselves as leaders in micro-mobility. They manufacture electric vehicles such as scooters and bikes, as well as electric skateboards.

They have products that are both recreational and functional in nature, helping supply individuals and corporations with mobile devices that meet their needs.

Given their expertise in electric mobility solutions, their foray into electric skates only seems natural.

Product to consider: RocketSkates

Acton’s RocketSkates contain 55-watt brushless motors in each wheel. They consist of two separate units that your feet strap into, and can travel at speeds up to 12 miles per hour using three different speed settings.

Acton R10 claims their product is the world’s very first pair of smart electric skates, as well.

RocketSkates generally last two hours or ten miles on a full charge. It’s also worth noting that the lithium-ion battery is removable, so you could theoretically have a back-up ready to extend your ride time even more.

Razor

A trusted manufacturer of electric scooters, skateboards, and skates, Razor’s products come highly-reviewed and with a 90-day warranty. They also provide excellent customer service, with service centers across the country.

And while scooters may be the most popular product manufactured by the brand, they are far from the only thing Razor does well.

This is a brand that has been around for a while, (since the year 2000, in fact). Given their over 20 years of experience in the industry, buyers can trust they are purchasing a well-tested and high-quality product.

Product to consider: Turbo Jetts Electric Heel Wheels

Razor’s Turbo Jetts features an 80-watt motor that allows the user to choose which foot is dominant. The lighted bearings provide added visibility, while the lithium-ion battery provides up to 30 minutes of fun.

With the Turbo Jett, you simply strap in your existing pair of shoes and you’re ready to go. The straps are also adjustable, allowing the skates to easily accommodate riders that are still growing.

Segway

There is a good chance you’ve heard of Segway before. They are a well-known brand that specializes in their trademark Segway scooters. That is far from all this company produces, however.

They deal with all kinds of electric mobility items, offering products in a variety of categories ranging from consumer goods to Powersports to robotics. Their versatile line-up includes go-karts, patrolling scooters, mopeds, and, you guessed it– electric rollerskates.

Product to consider: Ninebot Drift W1

With self-balancing technology, a smart battery management system, and flexible steering, the Ninebot Drift W1 is a solid offering from Segway. Capable of reaching speeds up to 7.5 miles per hour and with a battery lasting up to 45 minutes, there is plenty of fun to be had with these skates.

They are a little different than some of the other electric skates out there in that they don’t have a strap, so they do require some extra balance. But once you get the hang of them, they are responsive and smooth.

Safety Considerations

Safety is especially important on electric rollerblades, although the specific safety equipment is quite similar to that of traditional skates. First of all, always wear a helmet. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, and protecting your head can save your life.

Make sure your helmet fits snugly against your head, and unless it’s rated for multiple impacts, you need a new helmet after each and every collision.

Even dropping your helmet on your garage floor or another hard cement surface can cause extensive damage to the padding that could mean your helmet is less able to protect you after an impact.

Knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards are other important pieces of safety equipment. If you fall, they can help guard against skinned knees and broken bones. They may not be as vital as a helmet, but if your risk of falling is high, they are still a worthwhile investment.
